Exclusive Interview with Chase & Status

A few months ago, the Chase and Status energy-fuelled drum and bass/dubstep powerhouse sound shook The Junction and its bass thirsty capacity with the force and conviction of a band about to do great things. And now in March, following the recent release of their hugely anticipated new album ‘No More Idols’, Chase and Status have made the jump up to premier UK venues – including Cambridge’s largest live music venue, the Corn Exchange. Explorer spoke to one half of the band’s core, Saul ‘Chase’ Milton…

You’ve been touring relentlessly since the last album. How did you find time to make the new record?
It’s been a bit of mad one. Since the last album we’ve been DJing week in week out now for a long time. We began the task of becoming a band and having a live show and that was daunting to start with. The energy from the live show is out of this world. It takes up a lot of our time touring. Also we’ve been producing for other acts like Rhianna. So it’s been an extensive touring and producing schedule since the last record but we managed to find time somewhere!

What is the creative process like for you guys?
Usually what we’ll do is get a simple drumbeat and like 4 chords on the guitar. Then we’ll someone to sing on it and write the song over it. Then we’ll delete everything apart from the vocals and basically create a song around it. But it’s whatever really works. There’s no set rule.

How is the music translating live? What’s the set up?
It’s us on stage with instruments doing it live. We’ve got a live drummer and some featured guest vocalists coming on and performing and I play guitar on the guitar led tracks. It’s putting what we do in the studio live on stage and is very different from the DJing side of things.

You’ve got a host of guest vocalists on this album, many of which are British too…
Yeah it’s something like 14 tracks. It was a weird one. We decided we wanted to do a British album and work with 99.9% British acts. We’ve got Cee Lo on there but he’s talking British, London slang. And yeah, we think that incorporating songs with what we do, with our beats, works out well.

Will some these guests turn up on the tour?
Yeah, on various dates there’ll be people like MC Rage, Marley, Maverick Sabre, Liam Bailey, Claire Maguire, Tempa T, TInie Tempah.

Who are you bringing as tour support?
We’ve got DJ Yasmin and also Redlight supporting us as well. He makes some really hard to describe kinda music. It’s kinda house, funky, dubstep, and jungle influenced. Really cool. And then Yasmin is a really up-and-coming singer signed to Ministry, and Shy FX just produced her new single ‘On My Own’. We’re looking forward to having them guys on the road with us.

Do you have a say in who comes along?
100% yeah. If we don’t like someone, then they don’t come on tour with us.

What do you know about Cambridge?
We’ve played in Cambridge many a time. I’ve played at The Junction and a few other places that I can’t remember right now! But mainly at The Junction at a night called Warning which is drum and bass, and now a dubstep night. And also we done a live show there. Next is the Corn Exchange and I can’t wait for it!

Warning in Cambridge has been one of the UK's biggest drum & bass events ever since it launched 15 years ago. One of the driving forces behind it is resident DJ Concrete, so we caught up with him to find out the secrets of Warning's success...

How did you come up with the idea for Warning initially? There was a lack of good drum & bass parties in Cambridge, and we had so many great DJs and producers in the area we felt it was something we just had to do.

You've put on many many amazing parties, do any in particular stand out for you? There have been some incredible moments. Ten years of Warning was a monumental landmark for us. We were the first D&B promoters ever to put on record label nights such as Ram, True Playaz, etc. Those parties were amazing, as was the first Roni Size Reprazent live show that we hosted way back when Roni was only just carving out his career.

What do you attribute to the nights longevity? Our number one goal is to make sure the clubbers experience is second to none. We pride ourselves that the party goers can enjoy the best drum & bass music in a safe and friendly environment, with the best sound system and DJs possible.

Did you ever think 15 years later you would still be here doing this or it would of grown so much? You never know how long something is going to last, but it felt right from day one. We started off downstairs in a bar in Cambridge, and it just seemed to grow and grow naturally!

How have changed over the years as the music has evolved? As a DJ I've really had to expand my outlook and ways of getting the music to the listeners in this every changing industry . As well as playing as a resident at every Warning party, I also host The Upfront & Personal D&B Show which is a weekly Saturday night legal radio show between the hours of 10pm - 12pm on an urban dance radio station called Diverse FM 102.8 based in Luton that covers most parts of Bedfordshire.

Any advice to any new promoters out there? Make sure you get a safe and reliable venue, a security team that is friendly and not heavy handed, and make sure you are always professional with the DJ agencies to avoid any problems, or no shows down the line. Don't print flyers without getting 100% confirmation of the DJ bookings and don't take short cuts with your sound system.

Who have been your favourite artists over the years? Andy C, Hype, Grooverider, Fabio, Blame, Commix, Crissy Chris and Chase & Status have always tore the roof off every chance they had!

You're joining forces with Innovation in the Dam this year, are you likely to be doing more Warning parties abroad next year? We're looking at loads of ways to develop Warning nights overseas, and in the near future we can bring our clubbing experience to many more party goers worldwide!

Warning 15 Years Of Metalheadz

With a line-up featuring Doc Scott, Goldie, Bailey, Storm, Hype & Grooverider celebrating 15 years of one of the most respected drum and bass labels of all time, Warning's 15 Years Of Metalheadz was always going to be a special one and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Any of you that have never been to Warning in Cambridge I seriously suggest going, there are not many nights that can boast the heritage that Warning can. They celebrated 14 years in April... and not many nights can still continuously ram a monthly event of this capacity, something that truly highlights the strength of the Warning brand and the hard work of the Warning promoters.

In a time of recession and a decrease in the number of people going out Warning have managed to buck the trend and increase the size of the event to include a new room catering for all things liquid, a welcome addition and something that makes a great night even better.

Another indicator of how highly regarded the night is also evident by the amount of artists who choose to stay and soak up the atmosphere... and not just from the seclusion of a tucked away VIP room, but on the frontline with the paying public. IC3, Probe and Skibadee could be seen at the bar chatting away, Eksman in with the crowd stage left soaking up vibes before his set and Bailey happily conversing in the courtyard, if you ask anyone who's ever played or MCed here they'll tell you that Warning is one of the best nights in the UK... period!

As for the music, nobody disappointed, from residents Barrington & Blazin's opening to Andy C's encore after the music should have stopped, there were some serious dubs being dropped from all angles and for me because of the line-up and the Metalheadz theme this wasn't just an event based around hearing the same select DJs playing the same tunes in a different order. Metalheadz has only ever represented the very best of drum and bass and this was reflected across every set and it was refreshing to here some grown up D&B for a change!

Personal highlights included Goldie and Doc Scott who totally killed it, Marcus Intalex in room two and Bailey and Storm's set. Goldie doesn't call Bailey The Oracle without reason, if you are looking for drum and bass knowledge look no further and backed up by Storm they absolutely tore through special after special causing absolute carnage. Bass bins at full stretch the crowd were soon going mental...

Grooverider followed and then came the finale, and what a finale, how better to end an evening than an Andy C tear-out? Fresh from a two-hour stint in Oxford The Executioner stepped up to do exactly what Andy C does best. After the last tune dropped Andy looked to the back of the room for the volume to pushed back up for one more and after being obliged hit the room with the familiar barking dogs of Splash's 'Babylon', smashing the crowd into a frenzy for one last time.

And then that was it, the time had totally flown by (always the sign of a good night out) and Metalheadz vs Warning was done! A massive shout out goes to Goldie and all at the Metalheadz camp for 15 years of amazing music and to Pete the promoter of Warning for the hospitality and continuing to put on one of the best drum and bass nights in the country. I look forward to the next one!
